Clandeboye House -  Bangor:

The family Chapel of the Marquis of Dufferin and Ava is a short distance to the west of Clandeboye House in the Townland of Ballyleidy.   Also on the Estate and in the Townland of Ballyvarnet, is "Campo Santo" the family Burial Ground together with the Blackwood Mausoleum.  All inscriptions from the Chapel and Burial places follow below:

On the south wall of the Chapel, there is a bronze commemoration plaque on marble, with the family arms.  It reads,   "This chapel of Clandeboye was dedicated to the service of God on the first of January 1898 by the Right Reverend Dr. Welland, Lord Bishop of Down, assisted by the Very Reverend Dr. Maguire, Dean of Down and Rector of Bangor.

The dedication service was followed by the baptism of the Honourable Moira Violet Maria Plunket, grand-daughter of the Marquess of Dufferin and Ava.

 

BLACKWOOD [Tablet on north face of Mausoleum]

Within this vault repose the remains of Sir Robert Blackwood, Bart., born 5th November 1694, died 1763.   He married Lady Joyce Leeson in 1721.  A daughter Dorcas died in 1833, aged 93 years.  A son sleeps here beside him.

To the memory of the Hon. Robert Blackwood, Major in H.M. 52nd Regiment, eldest son of Hans Lord Dufferin, wounded at Badajoz, killed at Waterloo, in his 27th year.

BLACKWOOD [Very tall Celtic Cross at the exact centre of "Campo Santo", of which the base is inscribed on all four sides]

[south side]  To the memory of Archibald Earl of Ava, who fell mortally wounded in the defence of Ladysmith on January 6, 1900, in the 37th year of his age.

[north side]  To the memory of Frederick Temple, Marquess of Dufferin and Ava, P.C., K.P., G.C.B., G.C.S.I., G.C.M.G., G.C.I.E., D.C.L., LL.D., F.R.S., Lord Lieutenant and Custos Rotulorum of the County of Down and Vice Admiral of Ulster, born June 21 1826, died at Clandeboye February 12 1902.

[west side]  To the memory of Basil Temple-Blackwood, 2nd Lt. Grenadier Guards, killed in action in Flanders, July 4th 1917, in the 46th year of his age.   His name is graven on the Menin Gate.

[east side]  To the memory of Terence Hamilton-Temple-Blackwood, Marquess of Dufferin and Ava, born March 16th 1866, died February 7th 1918.

To the memory of Archibald, Earl of Ava, who fell mortally wounded at Ladysmith in the early morning of the 6th of January 1900.    The night is far spent, the day is at hand.

In loving memory of Archibald, 1st Earl of Ava, killed in action, S. Africa 1901.   Terence, 2nd Marquess of Dufferin and Ava, died 1918.    Basil killed in action, Flanders 1917.  Frederick 3rd Marquess of Dufferin and Ava, killed in flying accident 1930.   Helen Vicountess Novar, died 1941.  This tablet is erected by their sisters, Hermione Blackwood & Victoria Braithwaite.    How good and how pleasant a thing it is for brethren to dwell together in unity.  Psalm 134.

To the beloved memory of Frederick, Marquess of Dufferin and Ava, born at Florence on the 21st of June 1826, died at Clandeboye, the home he so dearly loved on the 12th of February 1902 in the 76th year of his age.

Trusting in the Cross of Christ.   Distinguished as was his public career, brilliant as were his intellectual gifts and eminent as were the services he rendered to his country in many lands, it was by the unfailing sympathy of a generous and loving nature that he gained the hearts of all who knew him.    Until the day break and the shadows flee away.
